Chester knew that their encounter against a strong promotion seeking team firmly in second place in the league would be a tough challenge which is exactly how the game turned out to be. Refusing to be cowed by their opponents who at full strength were a very well organised side with a good blend of experience and youthful talent that sought to control the game by sharp passing and high level individual skills. Gathering round the rock like figure of Uddin Chester’s defence closed down players as they broke forward frustrating the home side’s midfield forays at regular intervals. Fenney’s quick interceptions, Nicholas’ solid block tackling and Evans’ tireless running complemented Uddin’s fine positioning as attack after attack broke down. Olliers, Jones and Meikleroid worked hard and skilfully in midfield to disrupt Timperley’s possession based passing game. Sillett was once again commanding in goal though was unable to prevent an unlucky deflection from looping into the corner for the first goal and 10 minutes later an extremely well taken short corner routine was completed by Timperley’s centre forward scoring his twentieth goal of the season. Chester fought back in the second half with C Jones latching on to a defence splitting pass from Evans to round an opponent and crash the ball into the net for the best goal of the game. Continued hard running from Howell and McCombe and the rest of the midfield denied Timperley until they snaffled an opportunist goal after some dirty tricks in the Chester circle. The visitors were much cheered at the end of the game by the Timperley captain who complimented them by indicating that the game had been one of their most competitive of the season.
