Chester were indebted to five players from the 6th team who willingly joined their ranks in this closely fought game against a strong but youthful Neston side. Fielding a five man midfield in the first half combative displays from Gordon, Jeremy, Jones, Barry and Meicklereid stifled their opponents’ attacks and led to the creation of several good chances that unfortunately weren’t taken. Neston scored just before half time after the umpire changed his mind over a decision wrong footing the defenders allowing Neston to penetrate the circle and despite a fine, full length save from Sillett scored from the rebound. Fighting back tenaciously through outstanding work from Jeremy, Gordon and Jones Chester forced a penalty stroke from which Jones scored. This was quickly followed by a penetrating move that split the defence enabling Jeremy to skilfully slide the ball into the goal. After further pressure on the Neston defence the final quarter of the game led to the award of a penalty corner from which Neston grabbed a winner. Thanks to the newcomers who all performed admirably displaying commitment and tenacity in somewhat challenging circumstances.
