Their hard work paid off early on when a penalty corner was sent down the line for Sean Blain to deflect in for the first of his season. Despite conceding an equaliser Chester remained on top and man of the match Brett Dempster put the visitors ahead again before the break.
There were a number of chances to increase the lead either side of half time, and Chester wished they had capitalised on those opportunities when a spell of poor defending saw Crewe fight back and clinically pounce on a number of errors. In the sweltering heat Chester couldn't summon any more strength, and they went on to lose 5-2.
The 1st XI's first home league game of the season will see Didsbury Northern travelling over on Saturday 28 September.
