With snow and ice warnings in place and icy blasts of wind gusting across the turf at Abbey Gate College, the Chester over 45 masters stepped out for their quarterfinal cup match against Driffield.
The run up to this match had not been smooth for the Chester captain as players had dropped out through illness and injury at a rapid rate in the few days before. A rallying call was sent out and with true Chester club spirit, 3 Chester players stepped in at the last minute. Chester were ready to do battle.
Chester were hosting Driffield, who listed a strong side so Chester knew it was going to be a hard game. The game started off at a fast pace and Chester frequently found themselves in the Driffield circle but could not find the back of the net. Driffield were fast on the break after gaining possession and would sweep down the pitch in their masses but Chester were not only ready for them but also handled them and sent the ball back down the pitch.
0-0 at half time.
Chester's half-time team talk gave strong direction and with enthusiasm and determination Chester came out for the second half. The half started with play very much end to end giving the spectators good viewing and the Chester management, bitten nails and the odd coronary. Chester's change of tactic worked though and in the 47th minute Di Ormandy found the backboard. 1-0 Chester.
Driffield picked up the pace and frequently found their way into the Chester circle creating several opportunities and penalty corners, but to no avail. Chester held out. Final score 1-0 to Chester O45 ladies who now go on to the cup semi-finals.
